Logic School 7th-9th

Picture
The second stage of the Classical Trivium model is Logic. This stage corresponds to middle school (7th & 8th grades).
Children begin to think abstractly and analytically around this age and, therefore, are ready to learn how to reason well. Students begin to see the big picture and interrelations between different subjects.
At The Classical Academy, the focus now shifts to teaching the logical rules of reasoning and argument. While memorization work continues, teachers help students analyze the “why” of a topic. In addition to beginning the formal study of logic, students continue to work in the core subject areas of math, grammar, composition, Latin and the meat of the program-Omnibus, which encompasses theology, literature, and history.
For a more detailed description of how important the art of dialogue is to a logic school student, please read the following on our school blog:
A Better Approach to Middle School
Curriculum at a Glance
The Classical Academy strives to adopt curriculum that will allow the average child to excel and the gifted child to be challenged while staying true to a classical method of learning.

Logic
Middle and high school students will argue (and sometimes quarrel), but they won’t argue well without good training. Students at The Classical Academy will learn how to reason with clarity, relevance, and purpose . . . and have fun along the way! Our 7th and 8th graders will study and master 28 logical fallacies, which will provide an essential lifetime framework for filtering good and bad reasoning as well as writing and speaking effectively. The fallacies become relevant with practical applications through an analysis of current social, commercial, and political issues, as well as over 60 comical and clever phony advertisements. This mastery of informal logic is a foundational subject by which other subjects are evaluated, assessed, and learned.

Omnibus
Omnibus is one of the most important subjects for grades 7-12. The Omnibus courses teach students to think Biblically about everything by studying the greatest books of all time. The Omnibus courses encompass history, literature, and theology. Students gain a greater understanding of our world, its history, and our Creator, while learning how to challenge many of the worldviews they will face during their lives. By the time students graduate and have gone through the complete Omnibus program throughout 7th-12th grade, they will have worked through all 66 books of the Bible. In keeping with our desire to allow the average child to excel and the gifted child challenged while staying true to a classical method of learning, we do not read all the primary and secondary books that Omnibus suggests.

Math
All math classes at the Academy are grouped according to ability, not grade-level. This allows students to confidently work at their own pace. Students will take a math placement test upon acceptance to The Classical Academy so that students are placed to succeed!

During the logic years, students continue to deepen their thinking and application skills. Our grammar school math program is heavily focused on gaining number sense, making connections between topics, and focusing on place value to provide a deep knowledge of numbers. As students move into middle school math, there is a focus on their thinking skills combined with continuing to deepen their math ability. This combination fully prepares students for upper level math.

Writing
Our writing program at The Classical Academy helps students develop confidence in the writing process while honing the skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively. Through the process of learning to write well, students learn how to think clearly and to express themselves eloquently and persuasively. Students will learn nine structural models (note taking, writing paragraphs, stories, simple reports, writing from pictures, research reports, creative writing, essays, and critiques) to help them organize any type of composition. Our curriculum plan reaches the reluctant writer and the more experienced writer and works well with a whole range of abilities all in one class setting. It challenges those students who are confident writers already but also encourages and gives structure for those who struggle.

Grammar
The logic school grammar program is a direct sequel to our 1st-6th grade grammar studies. It takes students from basic definitions through advanced sentence structure and analysis, giving them all the grammar skills needed to write and speak with eloquence and confidence. Grammar exercises are drawn from real literature, novels, history, biographies, and science books. This encourages students to take the rules they're learning and look at how they operate in real literature. The logic school grammar program combines the three essential elements of language learning: understanding and memorizing rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of how those rules are used (descriptive instruction), and practice using those rules in exercises and in writing (practical experience).

Latin
Latin studies at The Classical Academy are designed to teach students to master the Latin grammar through a step-by-step process that brings out the logical and systematic nature of the language. Latin trains the mind to think in a logical, orderly fashion , encourages attention to detail., improves English skills, and prepares students for the study of other foreign languages. In studying Latin, your student will gain an academic vocabulary, a mastery of English grammar, and will develop the critical thinking skills that come from the study of a complex, inflected grammar.
Science
The logic school study of science begins with an introduction to the natural sciences. Students learn the scientific method, analyze and interpret experiments and receive an overview of archeology, geology and paleontology. Students also learn about various other areas of science including the simple machines, the five kingdoms, the human body and the many systems of the human body such as the digestive system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system and the nervous system. After having dedicated time to language and math mastery in the grammar school, our students are well prepared  to start serious study of science and will advance far more quickly in this important field with their language and math foundation.
Campus Day Chapel
In addition to their academic studies, students come together at the start of each campus day for chapel. This is a much loved part of our community school days. Chapel leader, Rick Stump, leads students in songs, catechism, Scripture memory, and Bible teaching. Many of our moms and dads, and sometimes even grandparents, attend our campus chapel time.
